I’ve had awful neck pain for a couple of years. It radiates into my shoulders & causes extreme headaches. Pain meds, ice, topicals, and massage do nothing. All I can do is try not to move my head at all until it gets better. I had a cheap, old fashioned little heating pad, but it it wouldn’t conform around my neck very well. So I started browsing...
I was so excited to find a CORDED Neck & Shoulder heating pad. The majority of them are microwaveable - which is nice, but don’t stay hot long enough to be useful.
This heating pad is actually very well made and SUPER SOFT It came in a rather small box, so I was a bit worried it would be too small. I pulled it & the really, really long power cord out of the box & it sort of “fell open”. WoW.
This heating pad is HUGE. And rather “heavy” - like a weighted blanket. Nice. It is also “Formed” to fit around any size neck & high up into the nape of the neck. Then it lays down the back & around the shoulders. The removable cord is attached at the bottom of the draped part so it’s on the side of the user. So far, so good. Then I put it on...
The first thing I noticed was that those “Forms” around the neck are very stiff. I put it on like I would put a cape on, and it did go on easily and immediately hugged my shoulders & back. But getting it around my neck was a different story. The collar has so much shape built into it, that it didn’t feel right. There was a large gap between the collar & my neck - so how was it going to apply heat where it’s actually needed the most? I tried adjusting it to make it tighter around. All this did was make those built in “Forms” or “Stays” (?) pop out somewhere else around my neck. So this was already a big problem for me. But I wanted to give it a chance, so I continued...
I had the ill-fitted cape on & grabbed the power cord. It is REALLY LONG (I suppose someone might want to clean their house while wearing this cape??) It was a little hard to plug it into the cape pad, but nothing I couldn’t handle. It made that side heavier & I had to readjust my cape pad. Plug into the outlet. I was finally ready to try this baby out!
As with all heating pads ever made, the instructions note that one must NEVER LAY on the pad!! So I got into bed & laid down.
BOING!! The collar opened up so I couldn’t watch TV. Just straight up in the air. This hard, stuff collar is starting to get on my nerves! I sat up, readjusted everything, and slowly laid back down. This time, the back part was caught under my butt & pulled it right off. Really? Ok. I’ll follow the instructions! I won’t lay on top of my cape pad!
I started out on LOW temperature. Is this thing on? MED. A little better. It feels REALLY good on my shoulders & upper back, but nothing on my neck. Since I don’t want it any warmer on my back, I grabbed a little pillow & put it behind my neck in a desperate attempt to get some heat on my neck. The pillow only made the front of the collar stand up & away from my throat. So I ended up rolling a hand towel up & putting it all the way around the collar (holding it closed at my throat). Success!! The collar was finally touching my skin & I could feel the warmth. Ahhh... It felt very, very nice. But this position was not at all relaxing & I was afraid to move. So I only had it on for about 30 minutes (this doesn’t include the 2 hours I spent fighting off the attacks from the Collar Monster!)
Which leads me to my biggest problem with this heating pad-cape... Those HARD form fitting “Stays” around the collar! They remind me of an old fashioned corset. They used bones up & down to give shape & keep it there until it was removed. The collar has an actual mind of it’s own!! I gotta say, I was EXHAUSTED after this experience! Serious.
But it was about to get a whole lot worse...
Remember that smallish box I mentioned? The one it came in? Yeah. Don’t EVEN think YOU are ever going to put it back into that box. It is NEVER going back into that box again! In fact, it is never going into ANY kind of box again! It is NEVER going to be folded or rolled or anything else! NEVER EVER. I dare anyone to fold that thing up to store away! Nope! Not happening. I gotta admire whoever invented the technology to get that huge thing into that little tiny box! Because this Cape Pad has its own mind.
Think about finding a feral cat in your basement. Now think about grabbing that feral cat & getting it into a cat carrier. Right? This scenario would be easier than putting this cape pad in any box to store it.
I ended up holding it up by the shoulders and dropping it into the floor. Whatever shape it took was the best it was going to be. I put it into one of those dollar store “zippered sweater bags” - the small one. I have to leave it on the floor because it won’t allow anything to be near it.
Ok. There’s MY experience with this Cape Pad. I’ll let you decide if you want it. Or if you want to give it to a co-worker (that you don’t like) for that Christmas gift exchange.
